Bad breath, also known as ‘halitosis’, is an embarrassing condition that some patients can suffer from and is one of the biggest reasons to have regular scale and cleans. It can make social interactions with friends and family difficult for the patient, often trying to keep their hand over their mouth or keep at a distance, ultimately impacting their self confidence.
There are many different causes of bad breath, many of which are due to oral disease. This can include gum disease and tooth decay. Fortunately, bad breath may be easily combated by dental treatment and following a simple oral health routine, including twice daily brushing of your teeth and tongue, flossing and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash. Talk to us about your concerns and we will explore the possible causes and solutions with you.
A scale and clean will leave your mouth feeling fresh. Plaque is the sticky bacteria that naturally forms on the teeth and causes gingivitis of the gums, resulting in bleeding gums. Gingivitis can then lead to Periodontal Disease, which, when left untreated, can lead to tooth loss and affect your overall health.
Calculus (or tartar) is plaque that has hardened over time and can no longer be removed with a toothbrush. It builds up above and below the gum line, requiring specialised dental instruments to remove. During your scale and clean, the dentist uses an ultrasonic scaler to carefully remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth. This is followed by a gentle polish to remove stains.
A fluoride treatment is normally then offered. This treatment is a very simple process administered by the dentist to help strengthen your enamel and prevent tooth decay. Fluoride absorbs into tooth enamel and strengthens the structure of developed teeth, making them less prone to decay. Fluoride also repairs teeth by remineralising areas in which tooth decay has begun, allowing it to actually reverse the process of decay.
