Mouth Guards

Sporting accidents are one of the most common causes of dental injury. Every year, thousands of people, including young children, are treated for dental injuries that could have been avoided by wearing a protective, custom fitted mouth guard. Wearing a mouth guard while playing contact sports can significantly reduce the risk of injuries to your teeth and jaws. A mouth guard helps absorb and spread the impact of a blow to the face that might otherwise result in injuries such as broken teeth, tooth loss, soft tissue injuries and broken jaws.

A “boil and bite” mouth guard bought from the chemist is usually does not fit as well as a custom mouth guard. Unless you are undergoing orthodontic treatment with Dr Marc, we will make you a customised mouth guard from a mould taken of your teeth.

A mouth guard that is custom made is far superior because it is specially designed to fit the exact contours of your mouth, is resilient, balances your bite and allows for speech and normal breathing. This type of mouth guard is the type recommended by the Australian Dental Association (ADA) and is the most effective in preventing injuries to the teeth and jaws.

Wearing an appropriately designed and made mouth guard while participating in sport will protect against dental injuries. Players of all ages involved in sports and activities where they are at risk of an injury to the face should protect their teeth with a properly fitted mouth guard.

After using your mouth guard rinse it in soap and warm water, then allow it to air dry. Store it in the plastic container provided when not in use. Do not leave your mouth guard in the car, because the heat may distort it and affect the fit. A child’s mouth guard will need to be replaced every 12 to 18 months as it will no longer fit when baby teeth are lost and the adult teeth erupt.
